Preparations of stone 
and fossils from the Ulrich Quarries 
is a meticulous hand process.


Each specimen is worked gently to remove the stone from around the encased skeleton or body form. Delicate fin rays, fish scales, soft part preservation, leaves, gossamer like insects all are found and spectacularly prepared through the expert handwork.

No other stone has such care of removal and preparation. The hand work of the material from Ulrich Quarries makes it world unique and a sought after stone with fossils of unsurpassed quality and accountability. 

Softer layers of stone are prepared with a needle scribe. Grain by grain the matrix from around the fossil is removed. Gentle arching motions pass energy from the hand to the pick and crumble the fine grains and cement of the stone.  The gentle application of an art gum eraser removes the final dust from around the perfectly preserved fossil. The natural colors of the minerals and fossilization process are exposed and preserved.

Vast layers of the quarries are marblehard and contain siliceous material en-abling hand polishing.

The natural stone is first honed with several applications of different grits of diamonds. The surface of the stone is rendered smooth. The fossils entombed are meticulously hand polished exposing the minerals which replaced the bones and filled the bone cavities.

The mineral Apatite replaces most of the bones while Quartz and Calcite fill the hollow spaces of bones


300 feet of layered matrix were deposited over 5 million years. Fossils appear as bumps or raised ridges outlining the bones and shape of the underlying creature. Preparation is dependent on the hardness and composition of the stone and fossil.
